21 Earthy Nursery Ideas That Are Soothing & Grounding

Creating a nursery space that’s cosy, cocooning and soothing to be in is probably one of the most important things when designing a nursery, and finding one design trend that ticks all the boxes and is easy to execute is here.

Earthy inspired design in a nursery is growing in popularity, it’s becoming much more mainstream in our interiors and the best part is that the color palette is totally soothing and not stimulating which makes it ideal for supporting baby in their nursery.

Not sure it’s for you? I’ve pulled together some of the most soothing earthy nurseries, along with some tips and color ideas to use in your own interior.

21 Earthy Nursery Ideas That Are Soothing & Grounding

1.Wooden Elements

Whilst colors play a big role in nailing this design in a nursery, the materials you use are just as important! Wooden elements are one of the easiest materials to incorporate as it has an inherent link to the natural world that surrounds us.

Opting for a wooden crib is such an easy way to do this, an accent piece that will ground the nursery. Other decor accessories such as mobiles, dressers, wall decor signs and photo frames are lovely ways to include it too.

2. Combine Natural Accents

Wood is a must have in an earthy nursery, but it’s not the only natural material that works well here. In fact combining a few natural materials will create a much more layered and stylish overall feel.

Rattan, wicker, jute and linen are easy materials to incorporate with baskets, rugs and small pieces of decor.

3. Encompassing Mural

Skip the wall paint and instead lean into a fully encompassing mural which puts you right into the heart of nature. This forest designed mural has a lighter top to it which instantly draws the eye up, whilst the base of the ground and mountains grounds this earthy nursery.

Opt for a lighter toned floor to create a soft balance.

4. Warm Accents

Whilst greens, browns, creams and reds are common earthy colors, you absolutely still can lean into some warmer accents for your own unique stamp.

A lovely warm pink like this on the curtains and pelmets frames the room and provides the sweetest contrast against the floral wallpaper.

5. Delicate, Nature Inspired Wallpaper

Wallpaper is always a lovely idea in a nursery, it’s very unique and can be perceived as artwork in its own right. This strawberry sweet pea wallpaper is the perfect nature piece, with lovely tones of cream, green and pink working together.

Use some wooden accents to add overall definition to the nursery color scheme.

6. Grounding Area Rug

A fab way to tap into the earthy inspired trend is by adding an earthy area rug to the nursery. It will ground the room and provides a tactile base underfoot.

Just make sure you lean into a large enough rug size. The aim is that it should comfortably sit underneath the legs of furniture to avoid it looking like your furniture is floating.

7. Warm Lime Wash Walls

Lime wash walls are hugely popular as they bring that added texture with them that a standard paint finish can’t. You can create a similar look by leaning into two paint colors a shade apart from each other, and brush stroking them free hand onto the walls.

It looks beautiful against this faux tree and white crib, a soft warm neutral base that is ideal for this earthy trend.

8. Unexpected Red Theory Unlocked

Heard of the unexpected red theory before? Well, it’s a theory that suggests that using a single pop of red in an interior scheme is the perfect finishing touch for pulling any room together.

Take note of the below using a canopy to test this theory. Yes, it really does work!

9. Easy On The Eye Green

Choose a comfortable green for the base in your nursery. Due to greens central positioning on the color wheel, it makes it virtually one of the easiest colors on the eye, so it’s just perfect for a nursery.

It’s soothing, easy on the eye and gives that perfect nod to the outside world.

Lean into a bit of bohemian design and combine both boho and earthy elements for two design trends that can perfectly blend together.

The soft furs and wall decor here nod to boho whilst the crisp backdrop, warm greens, browns and wooden details keep it firmly rooted with earthy design.

11. Include The Fifth Wall In Your Nursery Design Plans

Who said ceilings have to only be painted bright white? We’re getting more adventurous with color in our homes these days, and the ceiling is such a fun place to experiment with color.

Choose a rich, earthy terracotta shade like the one below and take it around 30cm down onto the wall to create a cosy and cocooning feel. A smart decorating trick that’s worth trying!

13. Faux Green Garland

You don’t have to only use real houseplants to get the benefit of that greenery in a color scheme. A faux garland like the below works beautifully when wrapped around something in a room, or even draped over a set of shelves out of the way.

You could introduce some other faux florals for further interest.

14. Safari Inspired

You don’t have to follow the rule book to a tee on earthy design, instead create a safari theme – it still nods to the natural world and is a theme that is ideal for boys and girls.

Use some pops of green and wooden elements to give it a grounding feel.

An instant way to add character in a room is half wall panelling, it provides the perfect opportunity for adding wallpaper to the top.

16. Color Zoning

Color zoning is an effective way to introduce color to a room without overpowering it. A clever way of doing this is like the below, zoned just behind the crib for a beautiful backdrop.

A soft green such as this nods to nature, and it’s a color that is perfect for unisex nurseries too.

Okay, so pink isn’t necessarily an earthy color, but paired with green? You’re onto a winner!

18. Layering

The best way to create a stylish and cozy nursery is to layer with differing colors. Even if you use cream as your main color, incorporating differing shades of cream with textiles such as curtains, cushions and throws creates the most interesting and tactile look.

As well as colors, consider this with texture as well – such as the ceiling light, curtains, wallpaper, rug and bedding in the nursery below.

19. Woodland Inspired

Another earthy inspired nursery could be going down the woodland route, another theme that is great if you’re not sure what gender you’re expecting.

Ground with a soft, lovely green and add a woodland inspired wallpaper to set the tone.

20. Pattern Drenching

For a little girls nursery, pattern drenching with a ditsy print like the below on a canopy and bedding is the sweetest way to add an earthy feel without feeling like you have to lean into green.

The brown tones on the little mobile and wall decor, gently ground the room. What a sweet theme!

21. Add A Houseplant

One of the most natural ways to add some green to a nursery for that nod to the outside is to include some house plants!

Make sure they’re out of reach of little hands though! They also have natural air purifying qualities and are good to be around.
