What Is GOTS?

Sustainably soft, we’re proud to say that all Bjarni products are sustainable, supported by third party certification, GOTS. There are many wonderful brands that have now made the switch to using organic cotton as opposed to traditional cotton. Whilst this is a great start for most, to ensure that the product can actually be classed as sustainable and organic, from seed to the finished product, you need to look for the world’s leading and highest certification in organic fibres, which is GOTS.

So, what exactly is GOTS and why is it important?

What does GOTS stand for?

GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard.

What Is GOTS?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

GOTS outlines the comprehensive rules for ecological and socially responsible textile production. The GOTS website outlines its reason for creation; ‘The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) was developed through collaboration by leading standard setters with the aim of defining requirements that are recognised world-wide and that ensure the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing all the way to labelling in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer’.

Founded in 2006, GOTS has grown from strength to strength, demonstrating its practical feasibility over the years. This has been supported by the growth in the consumption of organic fibres and the growing demand for organic and sustainable materials from the industry and retail sector. The introduction of the logo and labelling system from GOTS has allowed them to gain international recognition. The GOTS logo and labelling system is already visible on the shelves of many stores from natural textile shops to large-scale retailers. The GOTS certification shows consumers that the retailer has a strong acknowledgment of their reliable quality assurance concept.

How Do You Become GOTS Certified?

To become GOTS certified your entire supply chain needs to comply with GOTS standards. On-site inspection and certification of processors, manufacturers and traders performed by independent specially accredited bodies is the basis of the GOTS monitoring system in order to provide a credible assurance for the integrity of GOTS certified textiles.

Key aspects that are required to become GOTS certified;

  1. Contain at least 95% organic fibre.
  2. Not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde or any other toxic substances.
  3. Be coloured with nontoxic dyes or no dyes.
  4. Be produced in a mill that enforces strict social and environmental standards, treating their employees and the earth with deep respect. GOTS certification means that our products meet the very highest standards.

GOTS certification does play careful attention to the social and environmental standards. This includes no child labour, working conditions are safe and hygienic, no discrimination. No excessive working hours, harsh or inhuman treatment is prohibited. Ethical business practices and quality assurance system is put in place.
